Event details

This event will precede the main triathlon, and will start at 8:30am. All participants must register between 7am and 8am.

A list will be posted on the race website assigning waves in advance of the race day. The list will also be posted up at registration and in the swim area.

Distances and Age Groups

The aquathlon is for entrants aged between 10 and 17 years of age (inclusive). The distances for the swim and run vary depending on age group.

Category Age (on 31st December 2010) Swim Run
Minor Under 12 200m 1.5 km
Junior Under 14 300m 1.5 km
Intermediate Under 16 400m 3.0 km

Safety

Lifeguards will be on duty at the side of the pool.

Swimmers are advised that if they get into difficulty to simply move to the side of their respective lane and take support from the lane rope until he/she has recovered sufficiently to reach the end of the length.

There will be two race officials that will be watching for struggling swimmers and not counting lengths. If either of these officials feels a swimmer is endangering themselves or others swimmers they will be permitted to ask a swimmer to leave the pool. This swimmer will be allowed to complete the run leg but will not receive a finishing position.

The run will take place on a loop that starts within the NAC and eventually moves to a path outside the NAC. No public road is crossed at any stage during the run.

The Race

Swimmers must be at the staging area at 8:25am.

Each competitor will complete the appropriate number of lengths according to their age group. These will be counted by two race officials per lane.

On completion of the swim, participants will proceed to the plastic transition container assigned to them at the side of the pool. These will be numbered and will contain runners, tops etc for the run.

Once changed into running apparel:

  • Swimmers will exit the pool area and turn left following the run route around the NAC.
  • At the exit of the NAC runners exit onto the footpath and turn right up Snugboro Road.
Cones will mark the turning points for the various age groups. Marshals will note the numbers of the runners turning at the cones to ensure that each person completes the course.
  • On turning, the runners will return down Snugboro Road to the NAC entrance.
  • On re-entering the NAC gateway, the runners turn left and follow the same course around the perimeter of the grass area to the rear of the complex where they will be directed to the finish gantry.

Race officials will be present at all turning points and will give directions if required. It is important that every competitor understands the routes and distances themselves.

The organisers will not be responsible for swimmers or runners not completing the correct distances.
